Ultima Online Resisting Spells - the formula uo.com contradicts, and what the skill really stops
For official shards · Magic skill · Str/Dex · goes to 120 with a Power Scroll · every figure sourced
Resisting Spells does two published things: it puts a floor under all five elemental resistances whether you are wearing armour or not, and it lessens a specific published list of non-damaging offensive spells. uo.com describes it as giving “basic resistances (physical, fire, cold, poison, energy)”; in practice it also lessens the severity of spells that lower your stats or that last for a set time.
Two naming notes first. uo.com’s Scrolls of Power page calls the skill Magic Resistance, and its wiki page lives at /skills/resist-spells/, not /skills/resisting-spells/. All three names are the same skill.
And then the thing that has to come before everything else on this page: uo.com’s published formula for this skill does not produce uo.com’s own published value.
uo.com contradicts itself, and this is the most important fact here
uo.com publishes this formula verbatim:
Basic resistances = ( Resist skill − 40 ) ÷ 3 × 2, rounded down to the nearest whole number
and, on the same page, these anchor values verbatim:
“At 100 skill points, this gives you 40 points in all five resistances, at 120 skill points it gives 44 points in all five resistances.”
[!] Those two statements are not consistent with each other. uo.com’s own formula, applied to 120 skill, does not return uo.com’s own stated 44. One of the two is wrong and uo.com does not say which. Nothing is corrected or reconciled here, and no intermediate value has been calculated from either statement, because calculating from a formula that fails at its own published checkpoint would just be inventing numbers with extra steps.
An unpublished version is different again — a piecewise pair rather than a single expression:
| Skill range | Unpublished formula [!] |
|---|---|
| 40.0 and below | 0 minimum resist |
| 44.5 to 100 | Minimum Resist = ( Skill × 10 − 400 ) ÷ 15 |
| 110 to 120 | Minimum Resist = ( Skill + 100 ) ÷ 5 |
and this unpublished table of values:
| Skill | Minimum Resist [!] |
|---|---|
| 44.5 | 5 |
| 55 | 10 |
| 70 | 20 |
| 85 | 30 |
| 100 | 40 |
| 110 | 42 |
| 120 | 44 |
Lay the three against each other and the picture is clear:
- uo.com’s values agree with the unpublished table at both points where they overlap — 40 at 100 skill, 44 at 120.
- uo.com’s formula agrees with neither at 120.
- The unpublished piecewise pair reproduces both of uo.com’s stated values. The break between 100 and 110 is where the curve flattens sharply — the last twenty points are worth 4 resist, the previous fifteen were worth 10 [!].
- The two even use different names for the quantity: uo.com calls it “basic resistances”, the unpublished table calls it Minimum Resist. [!] It is not formally published that they are the same thing, though everything about them behaves as though they are.
Treat as official only uo.com’s two anchors; the seven rows of the unpublished table are marked [!]. Do not interpolate between them. A smooth resist-per-skill table could only be built by trusting a formula that fails its own test.
It is a floor, not a bonus
This is the mechanic people get wrong most often, and uo.com states it with an example:
“If you wear an armor that has 30 in all resistances, and you have 40 points in all resistances because of your Resisting Spells skill, then your final resistances will be 40 (and not 70).”
So the higher of armour resist and skill resist applies, per resistance type, and the two never add. Three consequences follow, and they are the whole of how to value the skill:
- On a character in a good suit, the resistance half of the skill does almost nothing. Armour already exceeds the floor in every element, so the floor never binds. What you are buying at that point is purely the spell-effect reduction.
- On a character with a resist hole, it is exactly worth the hole. Per-element, not overall — a suit that is capped in four elements and poor in one gets the benefit only in that one.
- On a character with no armour at all, the flat resistances apply regardless, which is the published basis for the skill on templates that cannot wear a real suit.
[!] uo.com does not state whether the skill’s flat resistances count toward or against the 70/75 resist cap. Not published either way.
What it actually defends against
The skill works on non-damaging offensive spells — debuffs, disables and drains. uo.com publishes the list by school:
| School | Spells uo.com lists |
|---|---|
| Magery | Clumsy, Curse, Feeblemind, Mana Drain, Mana Vampire, Paralyze, Paralyze Field, Poison, Poison Field, Weaken |
| Necromancy | Blood Oath, Corpse Skin, Mind Rot, Pain Spike |
| Spellweaving and Mysticism | Essence of Wind, Thunderstorm, Bombard, Mass Sleep, Nether Cyclone, Purge Magic, Sleep, Spell Plague |
[!] An unpublished variant of this list differs in three entries. It adds Evil Omen to the Necromancy list, and gives the Mysticism list as Purge Magic, Sleep, Mass Sleep and Spell Plague only — omitting Bombard and Nether Cyclone. The table above follows uo.com.
One non-spell entry belongs here too. uo.com: the weapon special move Force of Nature, “in addition to 15-35 delayed direct damage, applies a stun to the target for two seconds which can be reduced by magic resist every 12th hit”. [!] By how much, and at what resist level, is not published.
What it does not do
Two limits, both published, and both worth being blunt about:
- It does not stop direct damage. The skill does not prevent direct-damage spells such as Energy Bolt or Flamestrike. Your resistances reduce the damage; the skill does not add a separate save against it.
- It lessens rather than negates. uo.com frames the whole skill as reducing an effect’s severity — with one named exception. Poison is the one thing uo.com says can be fully resisted.
So a fully resisted Paralyze is not published as a thing that happens; a shorter one is. A fully resisted Poison is.
[!] And here is the gap that matters most in practice: the magnitude of the reduction is not published for any spell except Blood Oath. There is no published figure for how much Paralyze duration is reduced, how much stat loss Curse, Clumsy, Feeblemind or Weaken shed, or what happens to Mind Rot, Corpse Skin, Sleep, Thunderstorm or Essence of Wind. [!] Nor is the resist check formula itself — how the roll is made, and how the caster’s own Magery, Necromancy or Mysticism enters it. Those are the two biggest holes in the published record for this skill.
Blood Oath - the one published reduction, and the formulas are a factor of ten apart
Blood Oath is the only spell in the game with a published percentage-reduction formula tied to Resisting Spells. And uo.com’s formula and an unpublished one disagree on it badly:
| Version | Formula |
|---|---|
| uo.com | Percentage of damage resisted = ( Resist Spells ÷ 20 ) + 10 |
| Unpublished [!] | Percentage of damage resisted = ( Resisting Spells Skill ÷ 2 ) + 10 [!] |
[!] Different divisors — 20 against 2 — producing wildly different answers at the same skill. As with the base formula, this is probably a units problem (whole points against tenths), but neither states its units. Both are recorded. No value is computed from either here.
What is safe to say is the shape: against a Necromancy opponent, Resisting Spells is the published counter to Blood Oath’s damage reflection, and it is a scaling counter rather than an on/off one.
The thresholds that are published
| Skill | What changes |
|---|---|
| Below 40 | uo.com: “If your resistance is very low (below 40) then it becomes extremely difficult (but not impossible) to resist almost anything cast by a magic casting monster or grandmaster mage.” |
| 40.0 and below | 0 minimum resist [!]. Nothing at all from the floor mechanic. |
| 44.5 | First non-zero point on the unpublished table — 5 resist [!]. |
| Above 70 | Against Mysticism: Spell Plague’s chance to trigger is reduced by 3% per 10 points of magic resist above 70. Published on uo.com’s Mysticism page. |
| Between 100 and 110 | The unpublished formula [!] changes form here — where the curve flattens. |
| 120 | 44 resist, per uo.com. |
The 70 threshold is the only one on the list with a clean, unambiguous number from uo.com attached to a real spell: 3% off Spell Plague’s trigger chance per 10 points above 70. At 120 that is a published, countable reduction.
In PvP
Look at the defended-against list again and notice what it is: almost entirely the PvP debuff suite. Paralyze and Paralyze Field, Curse, Clumsy, Feeblemind, Weaken, Mana Drain, Mana Vampire, Blood Oath, Corpse Skin, Mind Rot, Pain Spike, Sleep, Mass Sleep, Purge Magic, Spell Plague, Essence of Wind, Thunderstorm. That is not a monster’s spell list. That is what another player casts at you.
- Paralyze is the headline. Being held still is how mage fights are won, and this is the published counter — though [!] by how much is not published.
- Poison is the one clean win. uo.com names it as the exception that can be fully resisted rather than merely lessened.
- It is measured directly against their Eval Int. The negative-buff formula on Evaluating Intelligence contains
( Caster’s Evaluate Intelligence − Target’s Resist Spells ) ÷ 10. Your Resist is literally subtracted from their damage skill when they curse you. - Spell Plague is the one place you can count the benefit: 3% off the trigger chance per 10 points above 70.
- Blood Oath has a published reduction, with the caveat above about which formula.
- Where it earns nothing. If your suit is already at cap in every element, the resistance half of this skill is dead weight — you are paying for the debuff reduction alone. That is a real argument, and it is why the skill is a template choice rather than an automatic include.
In PvM
- The “below 40” warning is explicitly about monsters too. uo.com’s sentence names “a magic casting monster or grandmaster mage” in the same breath. Below 40, almost nothing gets resisted.
- The flat resistances apply with no armour, which is the published case for the skill on any character who cannot wear a proper suit.
- And the reverse. A character already sitting at high armour resists gains nothing from the resistance component in those elements — only the spell-effect reduction remains. Against a boss whose damage is largely physical and whose disables are what actually kill you, that reduction is still the thing you want. Against a pure-damage encounter, it is not.
No mastery, and the stat that makes it odd
Resisting Spells has no Skill Mastery. It is not on uo.com’s list of the nineteen.
Its stats are the genuinely unusual part: primary Strength, secondary Dexterity. It is the only skill in the whole Magic group that does not have Intelligence as its primary stat — a fact that shows up on the character sheet as a Resist mage gaining Strength while training a magic skill.
Power Scrolls exist under the name Magic Resistance, from champion spawns, +5 / +10 / +15 / +20 to a 120 cap, non-cumulative, against the 720 total skill cap. uo.com’s stated value and the unpublished formula both give 44 at 120, so the scroll’s effect at the endpoint is published even though the route to it is not agreed. It also sits in jewellery Group 5 for the Skill Bonus property, with Peacemaking, Healing, Chivalry, Archery, Ninjitsu and Throwing — one per group per piece.
Training
There is a full route, unpublished [!], which is more than most skills get.
0–50 — New Haven. Complete the quest “Defying the Arcane” from the NPC Alefian in the Mage’s Guild. It grants accelerated skill gain during combat training, in 0.2–0.5% [!] increments, and rewards a blessed Bracelet of Resilience.
30–120 — several methods:
- New Haven: fight Spectral Spellbinders unarmed, which trains Wrestling at the same time.
- Malas: “hook” Crystal Elementals on house steps.
- At sea: engage Sea Serpents.
- Self-cast resistable spells on yourself — Weaken, Mana Drain, Paralyze, Mana Vampire.
- Felucca: walk through a Paralyze Field cast by a flaggable player.
The last two are the useful insight: the skill trains on being targeted, so you can supply the targeting yourself. Note also that NPC training tops out low and varies by NPC — a Farmer teaches Resisting Spells only to 6.8 [!], where a Mage NPC goes to 30.0 [!].
