Ultima Online Carpentry - the five prerequisite skills, every wood bonus, and the numbers uo.com never gives
For official shards · Trade Skills skill · Str/Dex · caps at 100 — no Power Scroll exists for it · every figure sourced
uo.com does not open the Carpentry page with a definition. It opens with a warning: “You’d like to be a carpenter? It’s a hard task you’ve set yourself, for not only do you need to be a master of your own trade, you’ll need to be adept in several others.”
That framing is accurate and it is the single most useful thing to tell somebody about the skill. Carpentry is the most skill-dependent craft in the game, and the prerequisites are published as hard numbers rather than advice. It is also the craft with the widest product range — wooden weapons, wooden armour, shields, every bard instrument, potion kegs, furniture and house add-ons all come out of the same toolbox. And it has one conspicuous hole in its published record, flagged in full below: uo.com publishes no exceptional bonus figures for carpentry at all.
The prerequisite table, and what it costs you
This is the concrete form of uo.com’s “adept in several others”. To see the full crafting menu, uo.com publishes six minimums:
| Skill | Level needed |
|---|---|
| Carpentry | 100 |
| Blacksmithing | 80 |
| Tailoring | 75 |
| Magery | 75 |
| Tinkering | 50 |
| Music | 45 |
Those six lines total 425 points against a 720 total skill cap. That is the whole argument on one line: a full-menu carpenter spends nearly sixty per cent of a character’s entire skill budget before adding Lumberjacking to gather the wood or Imbuing to finish the items. It is why the full-menu carpenter is a dedicated character and not a sideline on somebody else’s build.
In links, those prerequisites are Blacksmithy, Tailoring, Magery, Tinkering and Musicianship — uo.com’s table says simply “Music”.
uo.com also publishes suggested starting stats: Strength 45, Dexterity 25, Intelligence 10. The Strength weighting is the carrying capacity; logs are heavy.
The toolbox is the largest of any craft: Moulding Plane, Smoothing Plane, Jointing Plane, Hammer, Saw, Dovetail Saw, Froe, Inshave, Scorp and Nails.
The woods, and the skill each one needs
uo.com publishes these directly on the Carpentry page — unlike Bowcraft & Fletching, where uo.com does not publish the same values.
| Wood | Carpentry required |
|---|---|
| Oak | 65 |
| Ash | 75 |
| Yew | 85 |
| Heartwood | 95 |
| Bloodwood | 95 |
| Frostwood | 95 |
95 is the last material gate. Three of the six woods share it, so the final five points to grandmaster unlock no new wood — they are bought for the full crafting menu and for success chance, not for access to Frostwood.
Supporting figures uo.com publishes for the gathering side: trees regenerate in 20–30 minutes, a successful chop produces 10 logs, and a pack animal carries 1600 stones.
What each wood does - four separate tables
Carpentry is the only craft that touches four item categories at once, and uo.com publishes a different material table for each. This is the part of the skill worth studying, because the wood is chosen per item, not per character.
Armour:
| Wood | Phys | Fire | Cold | Poison | Energy | Durability | Luck | Lower Req. | HP Regen | Lower Weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Oak | 3 | 3 | — | 2 | 3 | 50 | 40 | — | — | — |
| Ash | 2 | — | 4 | 1 | 6 | — | — | 20 | — | 75% |
| Yew | 6 | 3 | 3 | — | 3 | — | — | — | 1 | — |
| Heartwood | 2 | 3 | 2 | 7 | 2 | — | — | — | — | — |
| Bloodwood | 3 | 8 | 1 | 3 | 3 | — | — | — | 2 | — |
| Frostwood | 2 | 1 | 8 | 3 | 4 | — | — | — | — | — |
Weapons — the Cold Dmg column is damage conversion, not a resist:
| Wood | Cold Dmg | Damage Inc. | Swing Speed | Hit Chance | Durability | Luck | Lower Req. | Lower Weight | HP Regen | Hit Life Leech |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Oak | — | 5% | — | — | 50 | 40 | — | — | — | — |
| Ash | — | — | 10% | — | — | — | 20 | 75% | — | — |
| Yew | — | 10% | — | 5% | — | — | — | — | — | — |
| Heartwood | — | — | — | — | — | — | — | — | — | Variable |
| Bloodwood | — | — | — | — | — | — | — | — | 2 | Variable |
| Frostwood | 40% | 12% | — | — | — | — | — | — | — | — |
Shields:
| Wood | Phys | Fire | Cold | Poison | Energy | Spell Channeling | Luck | Lower Req. | HP Regen |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Oak | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | — | — | — | — |
| Ash | — | — | — | — | 3 | — | — | 20 | — |
| Yew | 3 | — | — | — | — | — | — | — | 1 |
| Heartwood | — | — | — | — | — | — | — | — | — |
| Bloodwood | — | — | — | — | — | — | 40 | — | 2 |
| Frostwood | — | — | 3 | — | — | Yes | — | — | — |
Other equippable:
| Wood | Spell Channeling | Luck | HP Regen | Lower Req. |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Oak | — | 40 | — | — |
| Ash | — | — | — | 20 |
| Yew | — | — | 2 | — |
| Heartwood | — | — | — | — |
| Bloodwood | — | 20 | 2 | — |
| Frostwood | Yes | — | — | — |
Frostwood granting free Spell Channeling on shields and on other equippables is the standout line in all four tables, and it is why a frostwood shield matters to a caster — the property arrives on the material rather than costing a property slot. The frostwood shield also carries +3 cold alongside it.
[!] The physical damage column of the weapons table is not reproduced here. uo.com’s Material Bonuses page carries one. Those numbers exist on uo.com; they are left blank here rather than reconstructed from the armour table or from memory.
Heartwood, which rolls instead of adding
Heartwood is the odd one out. Rather than a fixed line, it applies one random property from a published set, and the set differs per category:
- Armour: Luck 40, Durability 50%, Lower Requirements 20%, Damage Increase 10%, Lower Weight 50%, Hit Chance Increase 5%, or Mage Armor.
- Shields: Dexterity Bonus 2, Strength Bonus 2, Physical Resist 5%, Reflect Physical Damage 5%, Self Repair 2, Cold Resist 3%, or Spell Channeling.
- Weapons: Luck 40, Durability 50%, Lower Requirements 20%, Swing Speed Increase 10%, Lower Weight 75%, Hit Chance Increase 5%, Hit Life Leech (variable), or Luck 10.
- Other: Luck 40, Hit Point Regeneration 2, Lower Requirements 20, Spell Channeling, or Luck 10.
Mage Armor on a heartwood armour roll is the interesting one. It removes the meditation penalty, which makes a piece of wooden armour wearable by a caster who wants Meditation to work. That is a template-enabling property arriving free on a material, at the cost of being one outcome among seven.
The runic dovetail saw
| Material | Min. Intensity | Max. Intensity | Min. Properties | Max. Properties | Charges |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Oak | 1% | 50% | 1 | 2 | 45 |
| Ash | 35% | 75% | 2 | 3 | 35 |
| Yew | 40% | 90% | 3 | 3 | 25 |
| Heartwood | 50% | 100% | 4 | 4 | 15 |
These are identical to the runic fletcher’s tool values on the Bowcraft & Fletching page — the two wood crafts share one runic ladder. And both sit a tier below metal: a Heartwood saw reaches 4 properties at 50–100%, where a Valorite runic hammer on the Blacksmithy page reaches 5 at 85–100%. That gap is published and it is worth knowing before committing to a wood-based suit.
uo.com states runic saws come from the Heartwood crafter quests, that Publish 85 extended runic use, and that Carpentry Bulk Orders arrived in Publish 95, late 2016.
[!] uo.com’s runic table lists only Oak, Ash, Yew and Heartwood. Whether Bloodwood or Frostwood runic dovetail saws exist is not stated either way.
The exceptional bonus for carpentry is not published anywhere
[!] This is the largest hole in Carpentry’s published record.
uo.com’s Carpentry page publishes no damage-increase percentage and no resist figure for exceptional carpentry items — not for wooden weapons, not for wooden armour, not for shields. The 35% Damage Increase and +15 resists are published on the Blacksmithing page, about smith work.
So the smith’s numbers are not asserted for Carpentry here. Copying them across would be an inference dressed up as a fact, and it might be right or it might not; the published record does not say.
The same applies to Arms Lore from the other direction. uo.com’s Carpentry page says that if “your plan includes crafting wooden armor and weapons you should also consider armslore”, and Carpentry is named on the Armslore page’s list of benefiting crafts — so the link is real and published. But [!] the Armslore page gives its figures (1% per 20 points, maximum 5%) without breaking them down per craft, and the Carpentry page gives no figures at all. What a carpenter’s Arms Lore adds to a wooden weapon in numbers is not published.
Two exceptional figures for Carpentry are unpublished by uo.com, and both are about non-equipment:
- Exceptional musical instruments get an extra 10% [!] chance to affect monsters.
- Exceptional furniture gets no bonus beyond the maker’s mark, and exceptional charged items and tools receive increased uses [!].
Enhancing stops at grandmaster, and repair has one exception
Carpentry is one of the six skills that can enhance, with Blacksmithing, Bowcrafting, Stonecrafting, Tailoring and Tinkering. An item can be enhanced only once; a normal failure consumes materials and allows another attempt; a catastrophic failure destroys the item.
But uo.com is explicit that there are no skill levels beyond grandmaster for Carpentry, so a carpenter’s enhancing success cannot be improved past 100. Only Blacksmithy and Tailoring keep improving above GM, and they are the only two crafting skills with Power Scrolls — the two facts reinforce each other. A carpenter has nothing left to buy.
On repairs, uo.com is precise: carpenters repair wooden weapons, shields and armor — “except nunchaku”, which are a tinker item and go to a Tinkering character. Bows are not a carpenter’s either; they belong to Bowcraft & Fletching alone.
Carpenters make repair deeds at a minimum of 50 skill. Deeds are blessed and survive death, at the published cost of “a substantially higher chance of loss of a durability point on a success, as compared to a crafter doing the repairs directly.” The general repair maths applies: a 40% base chance to lose maximum durability, offset 1% per 10.0 skill, worsened 1% per point of durability already lost.
Everything else a carpenter makes
The equipment is only part of the job, and most of what follows has no substitute anywhere else in the game:
- Musical instruments. Musicianship, Discordance, Provocation and Peacemaking all need one, and exceptional instruments carry an additional 10% [!] likelihood to affect monsters. Without a carpenter there are no bards.
- Potion kegs. A keg holds 100 potions and a full one weighs 100 stones, against 2 stones for each loose bottle — so kegging is a straight halving of weight and the reason bulk Alchemy supply is practical at all.
- Fukiya blowguns for Ninjitsu, whose darts come from a fletcher. Two crafters, one weapon.
- Lockable containers. uo.com notes that containers made by carpenters use Tinkering skill checks, not Carpentry ones — which is also what a Lockpicking character is working against.
- Furniture, house add-ons and containers — the entire player-housing economy.
- Stone Crafting is named in uo.com’s related-skills list for Carpentry.
In PvP
Carpentry never appears in a fight, and it reaches PvP by three distinct routes rather than one:
- Frostwood shields grant Spell Channeling as a free material property, plus +3 cold. For a PvP mage or a Parry caster, a shield that channels without costing a property slot is a template-enabling item, and a carpenter is the only source of one.
- Heartwood armour can roll Mage Armor, removing the meditation penalty on a wooden piece — directly relevant to a caster suit that still wants Meditation working.
- Wooden weapons and armour. Frostwood weapons carry 12% Damage Increase and 40% cold conversion; Ash gives 10% Swing Speed Increase; and a runic dovetail saw adds up to 4 properties at 50–100% on top.
- Potion kegs are what makes bulk potion supply to a PvP guild practical, by weight alone.
- Repairs on wooden weapons, shields and armour, plus blessed repair deeds at 50+ for field use.
- [!] What a carpenter’s exceptional quality is worth in numbers on any of those items is not published. See the section above.
In PvM
Two of Carpentry’s PvM contributions are things no other skill provides at all:
- The bards run on carpenter-made instruments. Discordance, Provocation and Peacemaking are three of the most effective PvM skills in the game, and none of them functions without an instrument — with exceptional ones carrying an extra 10% [!] likelihood to affect monsters.
- Wood type tunes armour to a dungeon. The armour table is a menu of single large resists: Bloodwood +8 fire, Frostwood +8 cold, Heartwood +7 poison, Yew +6 physical, Ash +6 energy. A carpenter can build a suit for the damage type you are about to walk into.
Beyond that: potion kegs for consumable logistics, fukiya blowguns for Ninjitsu, the housing and container economy, and Bulk Orders since Publish 95 as a gold and reward loop. [!] uo.com defers Carpentry BOD specifics to a separate page and publishes none of them here.
Caps, stats and training
Carpentry caps at 100. It is not on uo.com’s Scrolls of Power list, and there is no Power Scroll for it. There is no 105, no 110, no 120 — and since enhancing also stops improving at grandmaster, 100 is genuinely the end of the skill. It counts against the 720 total skill cap, which for a full-menu carpenter is the binding constraint on the whole character.
Primary stat Str, secondary Dex. No mastery — Carpentry is not on uo.com’s Skill Masteries page.
Training is where uo.com is thinnest. It publishes an order of items “in order of efficiency” and attaches no skill ranges to any of them:
- Wooden Shields
- Fukiya
- Bokuto
- Gnarled staff or Shepherds Crook
- Easels
- Wooden Foot Locker
[!] uo.com does not publish the skill bands those six steps cover, so no bands are given here. That is a real gap: it is the one thing a player training the skill most wants, and it is the one thing uo.com leaves out.
The Guaranteed Gain System is the floor underneath it: a mandatory 0.1 when nothing has been gained inside your bracket’s window — on a 700-point character, 22.6 hours at 90.0–94.9 and 27.0 hours at 95.0–99.9. A Scroll of Alacrity raises each check from 0.1 to 0.2–0.5 for 15 minutes.
What is not published
Carpentry has more unpublished than most crafts. None of it is filled in here:
- [!] The exceptional bonus for carpenter-crafted weapons, armour and shields. The smith’s 35% and +15 are the smith’s figures and are not asserted for Carpentry.
- [!] Arms Lore’s numeric effect on carpentry items. The link is published; the numbers are not broken down per craft.
- [!] Skill ranges for any of the six training steps.
- [!] Crafting talisman bonuses for Carpentry. uo.com publishes the 11–30% range on the Blacksmithing page only; no Carpentry figure exists.
- [!] Bulk Order specifics for Carpentry.
- [!] Any exceptional chance or crafting success-chance formula.
- [!] Repair mechanics specific to wooden items, beyond the general repair rules.
- [!] The per-wood physical damage values from the weapons material table.
- [!] Whether Bloodwood and Frostwood runic dovetail saws exist.
