Ultima Online Tinkering - the tool table, the traps uo.com never mentions, and an item that needs 120 skill with no scroll to get there

For official shards · Trade Skills skill · Dex/Int · caps at 100 — no Power Scroll exists for it · every figure sourced

uo.com opens the Tinkering page generously: “Long looked down upon by other trades, the tinker is the essential backbone of the crafting world, supplying high quality tools to all.” The point is the right one: Tinkering makes the tools every other crafter uses, and the table below is effectively a map of the whole crafting economy.

It is also the skill with the largest gap between what it does and what its official page says it does. The two most distinctive things a tinker makes — traps and golems — are not published on uo.com at all. Not a skill number, not a damage figure, not a recipe. Everything on this page about either is unpublished, and each such figure is marked where it appears.

What uo.com does not publish about this skill

Said first, because it changes how everything below should be read:

Everything else below that uo.com does not publish is marked [!] where it appears.

The tool table - a map of the crafting economy

uo.com states the basic requirement — “to craft an item you will need to use a set of Tinker’s Tools” — and notes that vendor tools come as a loose collection while “those crafted by tinker characters are contained neatly in a tool bag”. uo.com does not publish the skill numbers for the tools themselves, so that column is unpublished:

ToolTinkering [!]MaterialsSkill it serves

Lockpick45.01 IngotLockpicking
Flour Sifter50.03 IngotsCooking
Clippers50.04 IngotsTailoring
Metal Container Engraving Tool75.0——

That right-hand column is the argument for the skill in one glance. Ten separate trades cannot start without a tinker, and the most expensive tool on the list costs four ingots. A tinker at 50.0 [!] can already supply every tool in the table except the engraving tool.

Traps - none of which uo.com mentions

[!] To repeat the caveat, because it matters here more than anywhere: uo.com publishes nothing about traps. Every figure in this section is unpublished.

TrapTinkering [!]Materials
Dart Trap30.01 Ingot, 1 Crossbow Bolt
Poison Trap30.01 Ingot, 1 Poison Potion
Explosion Trap55.01 Ingot, 1 Explosion Potion
Faction trap variants65.0Faction Silver required

Traps are assembled into boxes. Note that two of the three consume Alchemy output: a poison trap is a poison potion in a box, and an explosion trap is an explosion potion in a box.

The trapped box. The single most used tinker product in PvP has no official write-up at all. The procedure, unpublished:

  1. Made by a tinker at 30 Tinkering [!], using an exceptional small crate locked down in a house.
  2. The crate is oriented North-South with a decoration tool.
  3. A dart trap is applied and the crate is locked with a key.
  4. The trap is reset by a mage casting Unlock.
  5. The crate is reoriented East-West and locked down.

A practical warning: at 30 skill you will fail a lot, so wear a Tinker Talisman with +10 [!] or more tinkering success chance. And one damage figure: triggering the box sets off the trap for about 10 hp [!] of damage.

Why anyone does this is the whole point: a trapped box is an excellent way to break paralysis without needing high Resisting Spells. Ten points of self-damage break a paralysis, and the box delivers them on demand.

[!] Nothing says how skill above 30 affects trap strength or damage, and no damage figures exist at all for poison or explosion traps. The “about 10 hp” is the only trap damage number, and it is approximate, unpublished, and for one trap type.

Golems - and two unpublished figures that disagree

uo.com’s position is quoted in full above: the golem “is not listed on the tinker tool menu, though it uses the tinker skill”, and no number follows.

[!] The only numbers are unpublished, and they contradict each other. One puts the golem at at least 70.0 [!] Tinkering with no Magery figure; another at 100 [!] Tinkering plus Magery, with no Magery figure given. uo.com’s Tinkered Craftables page publishes neither.

Thirty skill points apart, with uo.com silent. Neither is settled. [!] uo.com publishes no Magery figure for the golem either.

The recipe and the creature are more settled, though none of it is on uo.com either:

Golem statRange [!]
Strength251–350
Dexterity76–100
Intelligence101–150
Hit Points151–210
Stamina76–100
Mana101–150
Base Damage13–24
Barding Difficulty78.4
Wrestling / Tactics60.1–100.0 each
Resisting Spells150.1–190.0
ResistancesPhysical 35–55%, Fire 50–60%, Cold 10–30%, Poison 99–100%, Energy 30–40%

Two of those numbers are why the golem is worth the trouble. Resisting Spells of 150.1–190.0 is far past anything a player can reach, and 99–100% poison resistance is effective immunity. It is a tank pet a character with no Animal Taming at all can field — which is the only such thing in the game.

Jewellery

Jewellery blanks are the tinker’s quietest and most valuable product, because rings, bracelets, earrings and necklaces are the slots that carry skill bonuses and combat properties on a finished suit. uo.com publishes the whole list:

ItemTinkeringMaterials
Bracelet (gemmed)40.01 Gems, 2 Ingots
Earrings40.01 Gems, 2 Ingots
Necklace (silver / golden / jewelled)40.01 Gems, 2 Ingots
Ring (gemmed)40.01 Gems, 2 Ingots
Bracelet55.03 Ingots
Gargish Bracelet55.03 Ingots
Gargish Earrings55.03 Ingots
Gargish Necklace60.03 Ingots
Ring65.03 Ingots
Gargish Ring65.03 Ingots
Blue Diamond Ring75.010 Blue Diamond, 20 Diamond, 5 Ingots
Krampus minion earrings (gargoyles only)100.03 Ingots
Bracelet of Primal Consumption120.03 Ingots, 1 Ring of the Elements, 5 Blood of the Dark Father, 4 White Pearl

The gemmed pieces at 40.0 consume the gems a Mining character digs at 100 skill, which is one of the tighter couplings between two trade skills in the game.

uo.com adds a restriction that is easy to lose money on: “Gargish necklaces and earrings do not benefit from material bonuses via standard crafting or via enhancement.” It also states those two pieces are enhanced by Arms Lore instead.

And then there is the last row, which needs a section of its own.

The 120.0 item, and the Power Scroll that does not exist

uo.com’s Tinkered Craftables page lists the Bracelet of Primal Consumption at 120.0 Tinkering. It is the single highest published Tinkering requirement in the game.

Tinkering has no Power Scroll. It is absent from uo.com’s Scrolls of Power page, which names only Blacksmithy and Tailoring among the crafting skills with dedicated scrolls, and uo.com’s own Tinker Bulk Orders page lists no power scrolls among tinker BOD rewards either. The real skill ceiling is 100.0.

[!] So uo.com publishes a recipe requiring a skill value that uo.com also publishes no way of reaching. Nothing uo.com publishes explains how a character gets to 120.0 Tinkering. That is the state of it, and it is presented here as a published contradiction rather than as a skill level anyone should plan around.

Two things are worth saying about what the contradiction is not:

The obvious candidate is item-boosted skill from talismans or jewellery. uo.com does not say so, and no figure is constructed here from the guess. Until somebody publishes one, the honest description of the Bracelet of Primal Consumption is that its requirement is on record and its route is not.

Assemblies, clockwork and the 90-skill tier

Above the tools and jewellery sits a tier of larger devices, all published on uo.com’s Tinkered Craftables page:

ItemRequirementMaterials
Axle with Gears0.01 Axle, 1 Gears
Clock0.01 Clock Frame, 1 Clock Parts
Sextant0.01 Sextant Parts
Bola60.04 Bola Balls, 3 Leather or Hides
Hitching Rope60.0 Tinkering, 15.0 Animal Lore1 Resolve’s Bridle, 1 Rope
Potion Keg75.01 Barrel Lid, 1 Barrel Tap, 10 Empty Bottle, 1 Keg
Advanced Training Dummy90.01 Broadsword, 1 Close Helmet, 1 Platemail Tunic, 1 Training Dummy
Arcanic Rune Stone90.0 Tinkering, 80.0 Magery1 Crystal Shards, 5 Power Crystal
Clockwork Scorpion Assembly90.01 Clockwork Assembly, 1 Power Crystal, 1 Void Essence
Leather Wolf Assembly90.01 Clockwork Assembly, 1 Power Crystal, 2 Void Essence
Vollem Assembly90.01 Clockwork Assembly, 1 Power Crystal, 3 Void Essence
Distillery (East or South)90.04 Heating Stand, 2 Metal Keg
Hitching Post (replica)90.01 Animal Pheremone, 2 Hitching Rope, 50 Ingots, 1 Phillip’s Wooden Steed
Void Orb90.0 Tinkering, 80.0 Magery50 Black Pearl, 1 Dark Sapphire
Kotl Automaton100.0300 Ingots, Automaton Actuator, Stasis Chamber Power Core, Inoperative Automaton Head
Telescope100.025 Ingots, 1 Workable Glass, 1 Sextant Parts
Oracle of the Sea100.03 Ingots, 2 Workable Glass, 3 Ocean Sapphire

The Scorpion, Leather Wolf and Vollem trio all sit at 90.0 and differ only in Void Essence count — 1, 2 and 3. That is the published scaling: the recipe tier is flat and the cost is the rare ingredient.

Two of the recipes need a second skill as well as Tinkering: the Arcanic Rune Stone and the Void Orb both require 80.0 Magery, and the Hitching Rope requires 15.0 Animal Lore. The Arcanic Rune Stone is also the published downstream use for Crystal Shards, the rare resource a Lumberjacking character harvests.

In PvP

Tinkering has one of the most direct PvP applications of any crafting skill, and it is not about the tools:

In PvM

One further published note: uo.com lists Tinkering among the skills that can enhance items, specifically mechanical ones. [!] But it also states that enhancing success improves above grandmaster only in Tailoring and Blacksmithing — and since there are no Tinkering skill levels past GM at all, a tinker’s enhancing is the same on the last day of training as it is for ever afterwards.

Caps, stats and training

Tinkering caps at 100.0 real skill. No Power Scroll, as set out above, and no mastery — Tinkering is absent from uo.com’s Skill Masteries page. It counts against the 720 total skill cap. Primary stat Dex, secondary Int.

uo.com gives benchmarks rather than a table:

A fuller, unpublished ladder:

Range [!]Method
0–40Train from Amelia Youngstone in New Haven
40–45Scissors (2 ingots each)
45–60Tongs (1 ingot each)
60–75Lockpicks (1 ingot each)
75–85Bracelets (3 ingots each)
85–90Spyglasses (4 ingots each)
90–100Rings (3 ingots each)

The two differ on when lockpicks start — uo.com says 75, the unpublished ladder 60 [!] — but that is training advice, not a mechanic, and the reason lockpicks appear on both is that they cost one ingot per attempt, which makes them the cheapest thing in the skill to fail at repeatedly.

The Guaranteed Gain System is the backstop: a mandatory 0.1 when nothing has been gained inside your bracket’s window, which on a 700-point character runs 15.0 hours at 80.0–84.9, 18.6 hours at 85.0–89.9 and 27.0 hours at 95.0–99.9. A Scroll of Alacrity raises each check from 0.1 to 0.2–0.5 for 15 minutes.

Tinker Bulk Orders, briefly, since they fund the rest: uo.com publishes 23 distinct rewards from 10 to 1,200 points, four large BOD categories — Jewelry (3 parts), Keyring/Globe (4 parts), Tools (5 parts), Dining Set (6 parts) — and point values from 210 to 1,200 across ore types from Iron through Valorite. Named rewards include Tinker Tool Kits (250 charges), Master Craftsman Talismans (10 / 25 / 50 charges), the titles Metallurgist, Dabbler, Fixer, Clockmaker and Mechanic, and the recipes Kotl Black Rod (225 points), Dr Spector’s Lenses (310) and Kotl Automaton (350). Runic tools and power scrolls are not among them.
