Ultima Online Fishing - the skill thresholds, magic fish, SOS bottles, and the deep water argument

For official shards · Wilderness skill · Dex/Str · goes to 120 with a Power Scroll · every figure sourced

[!] Start with an oddity: uo.com’s Fishing page has no opening definition. Every other skill page leads with a one-line statement of what the skill is; this one goes straight into practical guidance, and uo.com has no quotable description of it. So the definition here is built from what the page describes rather than quoted from it.

What Fishing actually is, is a progression from a dock to deep water. At low skill you pull up footwear. Past 80 you are pulling up magic fish, white pearls, sea serpents and nets that spawn krakens, and the skill has quietly become a content generator with its own monsters and its own treasure loop.

The basic loop, and why you keep moving

You use a fishing pole on water. The one rule that shapes every session is that fishing spots are exhaustible: per uo.com, “Fishing spots run out and you will get the message ‘the fish are not biting here’”. A fisher who stands still stops catching, so the loop is cast, cast, move.

uo.com’s practical progression is shore fishing at 50 — it recommends Magincia — then working along docks into progressively deeper water as skill rises, and it notes a crystal ball of knowledge helps you tell whether you are positioned correctly.

The threshold ladder

uo.com publishes one ladder; a second set of thresholds is unpublished, so the two are kept apart rather than merged. From uo.com:

SkillWhat changes
50Shore fishing
75Ready for deep water and boats; deep water requires 14+ tiles from land
80White Pearls, Delicate Scales and magic fish begin; sea serpents appear
~80Normal fish phase out; High Seas fish take over

Not published by uo.com:

SkillWhat changes
70.1 [!]Sunken Treasure
75 [!]Message in a Bottle
80 [!]Special Fishing Net
85.0 [!]Skill gains only possible in deep water
95.1 [!]Crystal Ball reports only “Easy” difficulty

80 is the real dividing line. Four separate things start or stop there — magic fish, white pearls and delicate scales, sea serpents, special fishing nets — and the ordinary fish you have been catching stop appearing.

Deep water: uo.com’s rule and an unpublished one

This is the one live argument on the skill, and it is worth knowing which claim you are reading.

These are not the same claim. One is about where you can usefully fish and what counts as deep; the other is about where you can still gain skill, and it describes a moving distance rather than a fixed 14 tiles. uo.com does not reconcile them. uo.com’s fixed 14 tiles is the published rule; the 85.0 gains rule and its rising distance are not settled.

What you actually catch

Magic fish, from 80 skill

Four of them, with the effects quoted from uo.com:

FishEffect
Prized Fish+8–12% Intelligence for 150 seconds
Wondrous Fish+8–12% Dexterity for 150 seconds
Truly Rare Fish+8–12% Strength for 150 seconds
Highly Peculiar Fish+10 points stamina

These are temporary consumable effects and are unrelated to Fishing’s own primary and secondary stat gain. Anyone who obtains the fish can eat it; the skill is what produces them, not what benefits from them.

Big fish and trophies

Big fish are found only in deep water and come up at random weight. Per uo.com, a big fish displays its weight and the fisherman’s name if it exceeds 20 stones, and it can be preserved with a Taxidermy Kit as a trophy.

The extremes at both ends of the range are the closest thing the skill has to a leaderboard, and both are unpublished: the lightest big fish weighed 1 stone [!], and the heaviest 225 stones [!].

SOS bottles, nets, and sea serpent loot

This is where Fishing stops being a gathering skill and starts producing content.

Note the loop that closes there: serpents give nets and parchment, nets summon serpents, parchment becomes maps. Past 80 the skill feeds itself.

In PvP

[!] uo.com states no direct PvP application for Fishing. That is the honest position and nothing here dresses it up.

The nearest adjacent fact is the magic fish. Their published effects — +8–12% to a stat for 150 seconds, or +10 stamina — are real, and are available to any character who obtains the fish, from a fisher or otherwise. But [!] uo.com does not frame them as a PvP mechanic, and nothing further is claimed here.

In PvM

Skills it works with

[!] No mechanical interaction is published between Fishing and Tailoring, Carpentry or Tinkering. Those crafts are often associated with fishing gear and boats, but the uo.com Fishing page does not state a link.

Caps, stats and training

Fishing is on the Power Scroll list: 105 / 110 / 115 / 120 with a Wondrous, Exalted, Mythical or Legendary scroll, counting against the 720 total skill cap. Primary stat Dex, secondary Str. Fishing is not one of the skills with a Skill Mastery. It is also one of the few skills whose own quests are a published source of Power Scrolls.

The one volume benchmark is unpublished, and it is a sobering one: expect to catch around 3,800 fish [!] to go from 50 to 100. Also unpublished is 85.0 [!] as the point after which gains require deep water, with the distance from land rising every 5 skill points — see the deep-water section above before planning around that.

uo.com’s practical path is the simpler one: shore fishing at 50 with Magincia recommended, moving along docks into deeper water as skill rises, and boats and deep water from 75.

NPC trainers: Fisher, Fisher Guildmaster and wandering Healer. The Guaranteed Gain System backstops the grind with a mandatory 0.1 when nothing has been gained inside your bracket’s window, and a Scroll of Alacrity raises each check from 0.1 to 0.2–0.5 for 15 minutes.
